Two children found dead in locked car

Johannesburg - Two children were found dead after being trapped in a parked car in Springs, Gauteng, on Monday, paramedics said. According to Netcare 911 there were four children in the car, parked in the yard of a house, around 16:00. Spokesperson Santi Steinmann said two of them died and one of the surviving children was in critical condition and receiving treated at hospital.

Steinmann told News24 that it was not sure how the children got trapped in car, but added that police were investigating. However, eNCA reported that Ekurhuleni EMS spokesperson William Ntladi said five children were involved in the incident, and that three children survived. According to Ntladi the children were last seen by their parents after eating lunch at midday.

He said it appeared they became trapped in the car after climbing into the vehicle and closed the doors, and because there were no working door handles, they could not escape.
Temperatures in the area exceeded 30°C.

According to research temperatures in an unventilated car could be at least 30° higher than the outside temperature.
