Cote d'Ivoire booked their place for the Orange Africa Cup of Nations
Equatorial Guinea 2015 after holding Cameroon to a barren draw on
Wednesday in Abidjan.
The result ensured the Elephants finished on second place with
10-points, one more than DR Congo, who beat Sierra Leone 3-1 in
Kinshasa.
The Ivorians, who needed at least a point made certain of that
against a Cameroonian team that finished the game with 10 men after
captain Stephan Mbia was sent off early in the second half.
Mbia was shown the red card for fouling Gervinho on 56 minutes,
robbing the latter a good chance to score. The resultant free-kick taken
by Ivorian captain Yaya Toure was heading into the net before Vincent
Aboubakar headed out.
Earlier, Clinton N'jie was denied by Cote d'Ivoire goalie Sylvain
Gbohouo just before half time in a one-on-one situation in what was the
best chance of the first half.
In other Group D match, DR Congo accounted for Sierra Leone to remain
in contention for one of the best third place spots. The Leopards came
from behind to win after the Leone Stars shot into the lead on 27
minutes.
Striker Yannick Bolasie drew level on 40 minutes before Cedric
Mongongu fired them into the lead from the spot on 63 minutes. Jeremy
Bokila sealed victory in the dying minutes to end on a high.
Cameroon topped the group with 14 points, Cote d'Ivoire on 10 points,
DR Congo on nine points and Sierra Leone with just a point.
